Absurdity as Survival in Bureaucratic Systems

I chose to examine “Catch-22” because its reputation for blending humor with despair in a military context intrigued me, especially in terms of how rules and logic are manipulated for both control and escape. From the opening pages, I saw how the novel’s web of contradictions drives not only its plot but also its worldview.

Through recursive, circular logic and military bureaucracy that weaponizes contradiction, Joseph Heller crafts a world where the effort to survive war is constantly undermined by the very rules meant to ensure order and safety.

At the heart of “Catch-22” is a precise mechanism: the titular catch, a paradox that makes escape from dangerous circumstances impossible—specifically, the rule that one must be insane to fly more bombing missions, but requesting exemption proves one’s sanity, making the exemption void. This logical cul-de-sac recurs everywhere: Heller masterfully constructs dialogue and systems so that every attempt by protagonist Yossarian to subvert the dangers of war only reinforces his entrapment. The novel’s memorable control mechanism—the catch—remains shorthand for systems that undermine human autonomy. Its relevance endures because I see so many institutions still structured to frustrate logic, compassion, and agency, making Heller’s vision of intellectual survival within a bureaucratic maze as timely now as ever.
